Copyright Exceptions Wizard

If the use of the content is in an educational setting and meets certain criteria, it may qualify as an exception within the Copyright Act. In this case you are free to use it without permission and without infringing on its copyright protection.

To help determine if your use of a work qualifies for an exception to copyright in Canada, check the boxes below which are applicable and then click the "DOES IT QUALIFY AS AN EXCEPTION?" button at the end of the questions.



The work will be used for the purposes of review or criticism.
The work will be used for private study (not by a class).
The work will be shown to a class using a projector.
You wish to make a single copy of a news broadcast (excluding documentaries) for presentation to a class.
You wish to make a single copy of a broadcast to evaluate it for possible use in your class.
The reproduction or performance of the work is for the purpose of a test or examination.
Students are to give a live performance of the work as part of their course work.
You wish to play a sound recording of the work in class.
You wish to play a live broadcast of the work in class.
You wish to perform a musical work, or play a sound recording, or present a live television or radio broadcast performance of a musical work in class.
The work is not available commercially in a form suitable for your purpose.
Students will not be charged for use of the work, beyond the costs associated with making it available to them.
